Heavy Wrecker Service Where I-40 and I-75 Run Together

Heavy Duty Towing in Knoxville means getting a loaded tractor-trailer, a bus or a piece of equipment off a busy road safely and without more damage. We tow and recover semi trucks, box trucks, dump trucks, buses, motorcoaches, RVs and heavy equipment around Knoxville and the surrounding East Tennessee counties. Dispatch answers 24/7. When you call (865) 339-3202, the dispatcher gives you an honest arrival estimate based on where you are and what is happening on the road.

Two interstates on one road

Through western Knoxville, I-75 runs concurrently with I-40. According to Wikipedia's I-75 in Tennessee article, this is the busiest stretch of highway in the state. The I-40 article reports 187,191 vehicles a day between Papermill Road and I-640 in 2025. I-40 merges with I-75 after the US 321 interchange near Lenoir City, and I-75 splits off at the western end of I-640 about two miles past Weisgarber Road. A breakdown or wreck on this stretch backs up traffic quickly, which is why the exact exit or mile marker matters so much when you call.

The I-640 bypass and hazmat loads

I-640 is a 10.8-mile bypass about three miles north of downtown, with three lanes each way. Wikipedia notes that all trucks carrying hazardous cargo through Knoxville must use it. If your unit is hauling placarded freight, tell dispatch before we arrive. It changes how we stage, who we notify and where the load can be taken. The Sharp's Gap interchange joins I-640, I-75, I-275 and US 25W, and a multi-level interchange like that is a hard place to work a heavy recovery without traffic control.

Jellico Mountain and the climb north

North of Knoxville, I-75 climbs through the Cumberland Mountains toward Kentucky. The highway reaches its highest point in Tennessee, above 2,000 feet, on Jellico Mountain, with a truck climbing lane up the grade and a steep descent after. The Caryville to Jellico section was blasted through rock and opened in 1968, and rockslides have closed lanes in Campbell County in 2005, 2012 and 2016. In March 2022 a crash involving several tractor-trailers cut I-75 to one lane between mile markers 157 and 159 after about 5 inches of overnight snow. Our heavy wreckers and winch lines cover that corridor.

Fog, rain and ice

Knoxville gets about 51.9 inches of precipitation a year and a normal 4.6 inches of snow, with a record one-day snowfall of 17.5 inches. Dense fog is a regular problem in the valley. The National Weather Service in Morristown issued a Dense Fog Advisory in February 2026 with visibility down to a quarter mile in places. Farther south, the Hiwassee River area on I-75 between Cleveland and Athens is known for dense fog and for multi-vehicle pileups; TDOT now runs a computerized fog detection system there. Low visibility, wet shoulders and ice are what put trucks in ditches.

What we tow and recover

Heavy Duty Towing covers more than a hook and chain. We use heavy wreckers with underlifts for tractor-trailers and buses, winch lines for trucks stuck off the pavement, rotators and air cushions for rollovers, and lowboys or landolls for hauling equipment. Individual pages cover Semi Truck Towing, Rollover Uprighting, Winch Outs, Bus & Motorcoach Towing and Truck Roadside Service in more detail.

Freight in and around Knoxville

Knoxville is the home of Pilot Flying J, and there is a Pilot at 800 Watt Road on I-40/I-75 at exit 369 that stays open 24 hours. Amazon opened a delivery station on the former Knoxville Center Mall site in 2024. Local deliveries, long-haul freight moving between the Southeast and the Midwest, and tour buses heading for the Smokies all share the same few interstates. When one of them goes down, we move it.

What to have ready when you call

  • Your exact location: interstate, direction, mile marker or exit.
  • The unit: tractor-trailer, box truck, bus, RV, dump truck or equipment, and its approximate weight class.
  • Whether it is loaded, with what, and whether any of it is hazardous.
  • What is wrong: breakdown, accident, rollover, stuck in mud, flat tires or no fuel.
  • Who is paying: driver, fleet, insurer or broker, and any claim or dispatch number.

If you cannot give all of it, call anyway. We will work out the rest on the phone.

Common Questions

How much does heavy duty towing cost in Knoxville?

Published rate sheets give a rough guide. Louisville, Kentucky lists a heavy tow at $450 hook-up plus $9.50 per mile and recovery at $350 an hour. Horry County, South Carolina lists heavy wreckers at $576 an hour, and Flagler County, Florida lists $850 an hour. Your price depends on the unit, the distance, the scene and the time of day, and you get a written invoice estimate.

How fast can you get to me?

Dispatch answers 24/7 and gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call. It depends on where you are, traffic, weather and what else is on the road. We do not promise a number before we know your location.

What do I need to tell dispatch?

Give the interstate, direction and mile marker or exit, the type and weight of the unit, whether it is loaded and with what, what is wrong, and who is paying. If the load is hazardous, say so right away.

Can you tow a hazmat load?

Tell us before we arrive. Hazardous cargo changes the plan, who needs to be notified and where the unit can go. In Knoxville, trucks carrying hazardous cargo must use the I-640 bypass, so we plan the route accordingly.

Do you tow buses and RVs, or only semis?

Both, plus box trucks, dump trucks and heavy equipment. A bus with passengers aboard is handled differently than an empty trailer, so tell us if people are still with the vehicle.

Can I choose where my truck is towed?

Usually yes. Tell dispatch your shop, terminal or yard. When police order a tow from a crash scene the destination may be set for you, and we will explain what that means for storage and release.
